Skincare tips for harmful UV rays

Have you ever experienced that sunburn that makes your muscles sore and you promise yourself you'll never do that again? Then the following summer rolls around and you just happen to forget to put on sunscreen after sitting outside for a BBQ. BAM burnt shoulders and thighs again. 

This has happened to me multiple times and with fair skin, I burn so easily. I remember laying out in the summers and rubbing oil all over my body with the hope that I would tan. This is definitely one of those "should have listened to my mom" kind of things. 

Every time you get a sunburn, you damage your skin. Here are tips for avoiding sunburn and in the event that you do find yourself a nice shade of cherry red, there are tips for how to help those sunburns. 

Tips for avoiding UV Rays and Sunburn:

  1. Wear a hat to protect your face. If it's windy, baseball caps are usually best. 
  2. Find a tinted moisturizer with SPF. We've all had those days where we didn't plan to be outside. So if you wear a foundation with SPF in it, your face is always protected. I love one that I've found at Merle Norman in Medium Beige.
  3. Wear a lip color with SPF. I've discovered one at Eva Maison that I love called Suntegrity. Chapstick would work also.
  4. Always use sunscreen when you know you'll be outside for any period of time. Even on cloudy days you can burn easily. Use a higher SPF on areas that see the sun the most like your face and shoulders. 
  5. Wear sunglasses. This doesn't necessarily have to do with protecting your skin, but sunglasses are so important for your eyes in the sun. Plus then you won't be squinting because that can cause eye damage and wrinkles. 

Tips to treat a sunburn:

  1. Aloe Vera Gel- All natural, pure aloe vera can help cool your skin and take some of the redness away. 
  2. Lavender- If you're into essential oils, lavender really helps reduce redness and pain that sunburns cause. 
  3. Coconut Oil- It pretty much has the same effect of aloe vera gel. It helps to take the sting out plus reduce redness. 
  4. Vinegar- One time I went to a tanning bed and was so burnt my skin had a purple tint and I could hardly move. I soaked wash clothes in vinegar and laid them all over my body in the bath tub. It doesn't smell great but it really helped take the pain away. 
  5. Lotion- I love coconut oil because it is extremely moisturizing, but if you choose aloe, lotion is critical. If you burn like I do, you will probably peel. However, keeping your skin hydrated can help this.
